Farm to School Program

buylocal.jpgMaschio's Food Services is pleased to provide students with fresh, locally grown produce through its Farm to School Program and BUY FRESH, BUY LOCAL Chapter of Northwest Jersey. This program supplies school districts with locally grown foods from area farms which practice sustainable agricultural techniques in order to preserve and enhance the local ecosystem. The farm fresh seasonal foods are incorporated into the school lunch menu when available and are advertised as such so the students may realize this benefit. The efforts of this program are meant to:

  • provide school children with access to healthy, nutritious choices
  • bolster the local economy
  • preserve working farms and farmers
  • increase food security with local food systems being more resilient and less vulnerable

Maschio's Food Services is at the forefront of promoting local foods as on-going, regularly offered menu items. The food preparation staff has been trained in how to best capitalize on the fresh vegetables and fruits in season through proper freezing techniques as well as appropriate recipe development. The BUY FRESH, BUY LOCAL chapter is committed to educating the next generation about growing food on a sustainable, local scale. The students are aware of the differences seen in the fresh, local produce and can identify with local farms many of which are located in their neighborhoods.

Look for the BUY FRESH, BUY LOCAL logos and labels
on your school menus and cafeteria serving lines!
